Professional Liability Coverage

NOTE: Effective for the 2023 licence year, registrants must ensure they have $2M Liability insurance for services they conduct as a MLT.

What is Professional Liability Insurance (PLI)?

Professional Liability Insurance also known as Errors and Omissions (malpractice) insurance, that protects you from incidents arising from your work as Medical Laboratory Technologist in Canada.

Coverage options:

New applicants and registrants for renewal must select the insurance coverage applicable to them.

1. CSMLS Insurance

As a practicing member of the CSMLS, enhanced PLI of $2M is part of the annual membership through joint fee collection. This program covers MLTs for errors and omissions for services rendered while acting within the scope and duties as Medical Laboratory Technologist.  This coverage includes Legal Defense coverage.

2. Employer Insurance

See SSMLT Insurance policy for details and requirements.
Employer typically carry insurance for employees. Employer insurance is typically basic PLI and coverage does not extend to practice outside of their employment and does not cover legal defense, voluntary, or off-duty practice. 
The Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA) has confirmed: ' SHA holds professional liability insurance of at least $2Million and that SHA employees are covered for work they do for and on behalf of the SHA.’ 
If you have another employer, you must confirm coverage with them directly.


3. Private Insurance

See SSMLT Insurance policy for details and requirements.  Private insurance may be purchased in the amount required by SSMLT. A certificate of insurance must be submitted to and approved by SSMLT office.
