MLT - General

Students pursue post-secondary studies in medical laboratory science - usually a two or three year accredited training program at the community college or university level.

MLT-General are trained 5 general areas:

Clinical Chemistry

Conducts tests on blood and body fluid to detect components such as electrolytes,
enzymes, tumor markers and/or drugs.
Common Test : Blood Sugar (Glucose) to detect and monitor Diabetes  

Clinical Microbiology

Conducts tests on blood, body fluid and/or tissue samples to detect bacteria, fungi, viruses, and/or parasites.
Provides additional testing to identify antibiotic of choice.
Common Test : Urine Culture to detect Urinary Tract Infection  

Hematology

Conducts tests to measure blood cells and to detect diseases/disorders of the blood.
Common Test : Complete Blood Count that can detect infections and anemia.  

Transfusion Science

Conducts blood grouping and blood compatibility tests.
Common Test : Cross-match testing to select the appropriate blood for a blood transfusion.  

Histology

Prepares samples of body tissue for tests to detect disease.
Common Test : Biopsy of a breast lump to detect if cancer is present.

 

Once you've graduated from your post-secondary training you'll need to:

  1. Write the Canadian Society for Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS) national certification exam to be certified. This certification allows you to work as a MLT-General throughout Canada.
  2. CSMLS certification is required by most regulators for registration and is a requirement of employment by most employers.
  3. MLTs must also be licenced to practice by SSMLT to work in Saskatchewan.
